App Reviews: Learn To Camp, Fraiche Macarons, Markers

Is it safe to go camping with John Moore? Does he attract bears? We’ll find out this week on Moore in the Morning as I show him the ultimate guide to camping in Canada. I’ll also explore a recipe book devoted to Parisienne cookies and a delightful drawing app for Android devices.

Parks Canada Learn To Camp

iPhone/Android

Free

Smart and well organized, this outdoor guide from Parks Canada offers invaluable tips and tools for both inexperienced and veteran campers. The main guide covers the basics of buying the right equipment, setting it up, building a safe camp site, and taking special considerations for kids. The sections are simple to understand and supported with well-produced videos.

A collection of pre-made checklists help you prepare by letting you first tick off the items as you buy or gather them and then again when they’re packed for travel. You can also edit and customize the lists for your own needs.

A recipe book offers a number of clever meal suggestions, from banana oatmeal and thin crust pizzas to orange muffins and fire-roasted potatoes plus a detailed parks guide offers listings of all the main sites by province or territory with a look at their amenities and special features.

Fraiche Macarons

iPhone/iPad

$1.99

The pride of France, macarons are light, airy cookies that marry crispy shells with tasty fillings. They’re often a specialty of fancy bakeries and at fancy prices, but thanks to Vancouver-based foodie Candace Rohrick you can now make your very own.

Her app includes separate recipes for the shells and the fillings, allowing you to mix-n-match flavours such as lemon buttercream, chocolate ganache, or pistachio. While simple compared to most cooking apps, there’s no video guides or shopping lists that would make it easy for first-time cooks to use, Fraiche Macarons does include a section of general tips and thankfully some gorgeous photos to go with Rohrick’s flavourful recipes.

Markers

Android

Free

Every computer should have a simple drawing app. Just something you can use to sketch out an idea or give to your kids to keep them occupied. For Android users there’s Markers. Its pressure sensitive, so the more you push against the screen, the thicker the line you’ll draw, and it supports multi-touch so you can draw with two or three fingers at the same time (on tablets as much as five). You can use different markers or an air-brush and share your work not just with friends, but with other apps too.
